The Final Journey : an autobiography / by Sheila Byrne

By: Byrne, Sheila.
Material type: TextTextPublisher: 2005Description: ix, 148p.ISBN: B643.Subject(s): Death and Dying | Death
Contents:
This is the courageous story of a woman who enjoyed 'a good, fully lived life' but who would have 'liked a bit longer to enjoy some mortgage free years and indulge some dreams'. Sheila Byrne, having been diagnosed with cancer in March 2003, died almost exactly a year later. In that last year of life, she decided to record the main events that had led her to that point in her journey and to explain how she had come to terms with the reality of her illness. She did not fight it or feel angry or depressed. Rather, as she says, she felt 'disappointed'. 'Why not me?' she asked herself, for in her long career of 30 years in nursing, she had seen other people get this news on an all-too-regular basis. But what she did want was a 'good spell before her final journey - and this she most certainly received, with much love, empathy and support from her family, friends and colleagues.
